It is morning and Baba Boi looks distressed about something. He is typing something on his smartphone.

“Aaaaargh! Kwani hii password ni gani? si nakumbuka vile niliweka last time,” said Baba Boi. “Kwa nini saizi inanisumbua.”

“Baba Boi, ata wewe huwa unapoteza password yako kila saa,” said Mama Boi. “Na hata hujakaa na hii simu kwa mda mrefu.” She said.

“Si ati napoteza password,” said Baba Boi. “Kila time naweka password kwa account yangu ya Facebook iko sawa, lakini next time nikijaribu kuiweka tena, ni kama imebadilika.”

“Uko sure hakuna mtu mwingine anajua hiyo password yako?” asked Mama Boi.

“Ama kuna mtu anaweza kuwa amehack Facebook account yangu?” said Baba Boi. “Unajua juzi nimekuwa kwa cyber cafe.  Walikuwa wananisaidia kubadilisha password. Sijui kama walilog out kwa account yangu.”

“Basi, itabidi tumebadilisha password yako saizi,” she said. “Ndio sasa next time ukuwe unaikumbuka na kuijua vizuri.”

Baba Boi hands over his phone to Mama Boi. She is helping him out with the password issue.

“Ooooh, naikumbuka,” he said. “Inaendelea aje?” He asked.

“Iko poa so far.” She replied. “Unajua last time, ilikuwa inahusu kupoteza password, kama tu wewe.”She teased.

She hands over the phone to him.

“Sasa weka password mpya hapa,” she instructs. “Na usiniambie.”

“Wacha niweke ile yenye natumia kila mahali.” He said.

“Apana, usifanye hivo!” She exclaimed.

“Ata kwa Flash Squad wanasema, ile password unatumia kwa account moja, hufai kutumia kila mahali,”  she said.“Tumia password different kwa kila account.”

“Kwa nini, na hiyo ndio nitakumbuka virahisi?” He asked.

“Unajua kama mtu amepata password yako ya account moja, anaweza kuaccess hizo account zingine,” said Mama Boi.“Ndio maana hufai kutumia the same password kila mahali.”

“Sawa, na nikisahau hii ingine?” Asked Baba Boi.

“Wewe andika kwanza, niko hapa kukusaidia,” said Mama Boi.

“Nimeandika,” said Baba Boi.

“Sasa, shika kalamu na karatasi, uandike hiyo password alafu utaiweka mahali haitapotea,” She said. “Na pia mahali mtu hawezi kuipata.”

“Wueh, na wewe ni mnoma!” Said Baba Boi.

“Nakuwanga mnoma kila siku,” she chuckled. “ Sasa hizo steps, ndio zinaitwa permanence, privacy na protection.”

“Basi ntabadilisha passwords zangu zote, na niziandike kwa notebook yangu ya secret passwords,”  he said.

It’s a typical Saturday morning. Mama Boi is cleaning around the living room. She is expecting to host her nephews and niece for the day.

“Knock, Knock, Knock,” someone is knocking on the door.

“Hodi.” It’s Mama Janet – elder sister to Baba Boi.

“Karibuni sana Mama Janet.” Welcomed Mama Boi.

“Asante sana Mama Boi,” Said Mama Janet. “Tunashukuru.”

“Akina Boi na Sydo walikuwa wamefurahia sana kujua cousins zao wanakuja  kuwatembelea  hii weekend.” Said Mama Boi.

“Ata mimi nimefurahi sana kuwaona.”  Sighed Mama Janet as she sat down. “Mara ya mwisho kuonana ilikuwa before COVID-19 alafu tukakuwa na lockdown.” She said, “Na Keni amekuwa mkubwa, ameshafika 3 years?” She asked.

“Ako karibu kufika,” explained Mama Boi. “Keni ako na miaka mbili na miezi sita.” “Janet na Kevin pia wamekuwa wakubwa, mpaka sasa Janet ako na simu yake. Sasa amebakisha kupata tu kazi.” Teased Mama Boi.

“Ata kazi yake ni kupiga mapicha na kupost kwa social media kila siku.” Ridiculed her mum.

They all joined in the laughter

“Hio ni nzuri sana. Wacha nipanguze meza alafu niwaletee Chai.” Said Mama Boi as she was heading to the Kitchen area.

“Wacha nikuje nikusaidie Mama Boi.” Said Mama Janet as she followed her.

The children were by themselves in the living room. They were happy to see each other and had a small chat.

“Waaaah, Boi kwani mlinunua TV kubwa?” asked Kevin. He was so amused to see the enormous screen size mounted on the wall.

“Eeeeh, Dad alitununulia TV kubwa ndio tukuwe tunaona Akili Kids! TV vizuri.” Replied Boi.

“Aaaaaai, kwani hamkuwa mnawatch Akili Kids! TV kwa ile TV ingine?” inquired Kevin. “Si ilikuwa tu sawa?”

“Sisi tulikuwa tunataka kuwatch Akili Kids! TV kwa screen kubwa kama vile watu huwa wanawatch kwa Cinemas.” Said Boi “Lakini, time ya Easter, Dad alipata offer poa sana ya .….”

“Ni mimi niliconvince Dad anunue hii TV”. Interrupted Sydo.

“Apana si wewe!” shouted Boi.

“Ni mimi” replied Sydo.

“Sasa mtashinda mkibishana ni nani aliconvince baba yenu kununua TV?” jumped in Janet. “Ebu nipatie remote ya TV Sydo niweke reality show ile napenda.” She commanded.

“Lakini sisi tunataka kuwatch Akili Kids! TV.” Cried out Boi and Kevin.

“Basi wacha niweke tu kidogo, nipige picha ndio nitaonyesha friends wangu nilikuwa naiwatch.”

The younger ones agreed but unwillingly.

She changed the channel and watched for a few minutes, probably less than 5 minutes. She took out her smartphone and took photos of the show on the TV.

Immediately, Janet posted the photos and a video clip of her watching her favourite reality show on Instagram.

She captioned, ‘Tuned into my favourite reality show’ #realitytv#enjoyment#tuenderoad#fedhaestate#bigscreen

The children enjoyed continued watching the television and Kevin, Stevo together with Boi and his siblings watched the repeat of Flash Squad at 3:00PM. The show ended after 10 minutes.

“Waaaah! Waseeh! nimefanya mistake kubwa sana.” Said Janet feeling remorseful.

“Umefanya nini?” asked Boi.

“Nimepost photos na video nimerecord tu saizi online, na nimeweka details mingi sana kama jina ya estate yenu na barabara pia.” She said. “Alafu kuna mtu amecomment ati ‘tunakujia hiyo tv’ kwa comments.”

“Mtu anakujia TV yetu?“ asked Boi. “Kwani hujaskia vile wamesema kwa Flash Squad kuhusu kupost vitu online.”

“Si tumewatch tu saizi, kwani ningejua aje kile wangesema before show ianze?” rebutted Janet.

“Hufai kupost online kuhusu mahali uko, ju watu wabaya wanaweza kupata. Alafu ile time umepost haufai kukuwa hapo saizo.” Said Boi.

“Boi! Boi! alafu pia walisema kama kuna information private, mtu asipost online.” Added Sydo.

“Eeeh! pia hiyo.” Affirmed Boi.

Mama Boi and Mama Janet come back to the living room.

“Ni nani huyo amefanya mistake kubwa sana?” Asked Mama Janet.

“Ni Janet Mum.” Snitched Kevin.

“Amefanya nini?” She asked Kevin.

“Amepost picha na videos online na aliweka details mingi sana.” He said. “Alafu after tumewatch Flash Squad akaona mtu hafai kufanya hivo.”

“Janet! kwani hujui kuna vitu mtu hafai kupost online.” Said Mama Janet. “Hufai kupost location yako, mahali unaishi, namba yako ya simu, ID number, bank account details zako na hata saa zingine mambo ya kazi.” She warned her.

“Pole sana mum, sitarudia. Hii ndio mara ya mwisho.” She assured the mum.

“Na wewe ndio master wa kupost na hujui vitu mtu hafai kupost.” Teased the mum.

“Umeshadelete hizo picha na videos?” Asked Mama Janet.

“Bado.” Replied Janet.

“Nadelete to saizi, one minute tu.” Said Janet.

“Aya, nishadelete.  Poleni waseeh! Najua ningewaweka kwa situation mbaya. Nimelearn mistake yangu. Sitarudia tena.” She said.

Boi and his siblings, Sydo and Keni are back home from school. They have just closed for their mid-term break and are about to start binge-watching on Akili Kids! TV.
“Mum! Mum!, leo kwa shule headmaster alituambia tumefunga shule for mid-term holiday”
“Eeeeeh!, hiyo ni poa sana!” Exclaimed Mama Boi.“So mmefunga for how long?” She asked.
“Teacher kwa class alisema atatupea homework ya kutosha for 5 days, ni kama itakuwa for 5 days”
“Kwa hivyo uko na homework ya kufanya?”  Na wewe Sydo na Keni, mko na homework?”
“Eeeeeh!” said the children in a cheerful manner.
“Basi nataka, mjipange vizuri na timetable yenu, alafu mmalize homework zenu, mmeniskia?”
“Yeees Mum!” said the kids as they went to change their school uniforms and keep their bags away.

Sydo and Boi come back running to the living room. Hurriedly they grab the remote. Boi does so before Sydo.
“Mbona mnakimbia hivo ndani ya nyumba?” Asked Mama boi while seeming a little bit displeased.
“Mnajua mnaweza kuumia vibaya, na sina pesa ya kupeleka mtu hospitali. Ni nini mnakimbilia hivo?”
“Ni remote!” Poor Sydo cried out as he had lost to his brother Boi.“Nataka kuwatch Akili Kids!” said Boi.
“Basi si mnaweza kuwatch bila kukimbia hivo kwa sitting room.”
“Kama mnataka kuwatch Akili Kids!, kuna a new show niliona wanaleta inaitwa FLASH SQUAD”.
“Wooooow!” Keni, the younger sister was amazed, “Ni poa Mum?” she asked.
“Ata mimi sijui, inakaa kuwa poa juu ile trailer wamekuwa wakileta ni poa sana.”
Keni and her siblings were all elated about the news their mum was giving them.
“Inakuja saa ngapi?” asked Boi. “Inaanza by 7:30 PM on Fridays kwa Akili Fam!.
Mkiwacha mimi na Baba yenu tuwatch news leo usiku, tutawaekea after news.”
“But mum, news inabooooo!” said Boi in a gloomy face.
“Basi tuweke 15 minutes after news imeanza.” said Boi
“Wacha tuweke after 20 minutes!” Sydo jumping in to negotiate.
“Lakini ata Flash Squad haitakuwa imeanza” Mama Boi trying to convince them. “Ni sawa Mum! Bora utatuwekea after news, sindio?”
“Yes kamama” she assured the little one.

Time passed and evening approached. The children were all excited to begin watching Flash Squad.
“Mum, news imeisha, tuwekee Akili Kids! pleeease😊😊😊,” pleaded the young one, Keni.
She switched the channel and Flash Squad had barely started.
They were sitting pretty and you could see the excitement in their faces.
The show is showingMIMI(A character in the show) is at her locker.
Her smartphone pings and she looks at the screen. We don’t see what is on it, but Mimi is clearly distressed.
The kids remained glued to the television, and they watched till the end without anyone interrupting their attention on the show.
“Waaaah, na iko Bie” said Boi and all his siblings nodded in agreement.

The show ended after 10 minutes.
“So mum! unakumbuka, ile time watu walihack Facebook account yako alafu wakaanza kuitisha friends wako pesa…” Sydo in amusement said.
“Basi ata sisi tukipata simu, tutakuwa careful sana na mambo ya social media”
“Eeeeh! ni vizuri mkae rada”, said Mama Boi laughing with the kids.
“Basi hii Flash Squad ni noma, itakuwa inawapatia information poa poa especially kuhusu vile mtakuwa mnajichunga na mambo ya internet na social media.” Said Mama Boi.

Baba Boi comes home from work feeling a bit grumpy. He sits at his usual spot in the living room and and he is not in the mood to watch Akili Fam! with akina Boi. That’s quite strange. Hadi watoto wameshangaa…

There’s an uncomfortable silence which is quickly interupted by a question…

“Ni nini mbaya?”  Mama Boi asked.

“Kuchoka tu…” Baba Boi replied.

“Aii…apana. Kuna kitu inakusumbua. Ni nini? Niambie…”Mama Boi insisted.

“All my friends are getting their loans approved na sasa they’ve bought new boda bodas while mine have all been denied.” he vented out.

“How am I supposed to expand my boda business kama ata siwezi pata kasoft loan? Yet my credit score iko tu sawa. Hii 2022 inafaa iwe mwaka yangu but so far, niko nyuma!” Baba Boi lamented.

“Okay. Okay. Wacha I’ll see how to help”. Mama Boi encouraged him.

The next day, Mama Boi was having her bi-weekly chama in her house. She seemed to be detached from this meeting…

“Mama Boi, umefikisha cabbage huko kaloleni?” Mama Majembe teased.

“Mama Boi, Mama Boi”…

“Oh! Oh! Sorry, Mama Majembe. My mind had drifted kidogo.” Mama Boi snapped out of her thoughts.

“Eii, nimukuita mara mingi! Kwani leo huchangii meeting?” Mama Majembe asked.

“Pole. Nilikuwa nafikiria loan ingine hapo Baba Boi amekuwa akijaribu kuapply but hajafaulu. I wonder how I can help him…” Mama Boi inquired.

“What has he been wearing akienda kuapply loan kwa hio offici?” Mama Majembe asked.

“His kawaida motorbike suit. Why?” Mama Boi replied. “Hmmmm…Unajua ukiwa kwa boda boda, ni rahisi sana nguo yako kupata uchafu. Si vumbi, si matope, si kunyeshewa…so, unaweza pata nguo imepata stains over time. Unaweza angalia kama his suit

has stains then do the necessary. Plus, watu husema first impression matters…” Mama Majembe advised.

“Btw!!! Mbona sikufikiria hivo. Wacha nitaenda supermarket after this meeting kuget sabuni strong!” Mama Boi replied.

Later that day, Mama Boi went to the supermarket. As she was strolling down the isle ya soaps, akaona the New OMO Bleach Multipurpose kwa shelf. Zilikuwa tatu. Regular, Color Safe na Lemon. They were all calling her name. She picked one and read the instructions carefully. Mama Boi was convinced it would work and she decided to try out OMO Color Safe. It was only 30 bob!

Mama Boi got home in good time and washed Baba Boi’s Motor Bike Suit. As she was washing, the fragrance of the soap lingered in the air and the soap was super gentle on her hands. Once Mama Boi was done, she rinsed the suit and hanged it on the line to dry.

“Baba Boi, I think you should go back to that office and reapply the loan.” Mama Boi advised.

“Sure?” Baba Boi asked.

“I have increased your chances of getting that loan approved.” Mama Boi confidently affirmed him.

“Aje?” Baba Boi asked.

“I have my ways.” Mama Boi smirked.

“Fine, ntakuwa hapo kesho by 7 am.” Baba Boi agreed.

True to his words, Baba Boi was at the office by 7 am sharp! He noticed the admin was smiling at him and surprisingly asked him where he got his suit. Kidogo kidogo, the admin gave him his application papers with a stamp of approval. Everything was happening fast, it almost felt like one of those “DJ Afro’s” movies. Haraka haraka, Baba Boi got on his bike and dashed home to share the news with his wife.

My beautiful goddess! My loan has been approved! “ Baba Boi hugged his wife.

“That’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you! You can now get more bodas for biashara” Mama Boi replied.

“ Oh yes!!! Ebu niambie, how did you do it?” Baba Boi asked.

“It’s the OMO Bleach Multipurpose I used to wash your suit. And it worked!” Mama Boi gleefully replied.

“Ha! That’s why the admin kept asking where I got my suit from. You smart woman!” Baba Boi replied.

It was a good day at Boi’s home and everyone was happy! What a relief! 🙂

(It’s 4 pm and the pupils at Roho Safi Primary School are playing in the field.)

“Wewe Brayo! Leta hiyo sweater yako ama hutacheza na sisi!” Boi said in a gruff voice.

“Boi! Wacha hizo…si last time nilikupea lunch box yangu? Wacha tu nicheze na nyinyi woiye…” Brayo pleaded.

“Sisi ni ma-first body! Leta sweater yako kama unataka kucheza na sisi,” Boi insisted.

“Eeee! Peana hio sweater yako kama unataka kutujoin!” His friends incited.

“Saweni tu!” Brayo sobbed as he gave Boi his sweater and ran back to class.

“Nkt! Brayo anakuanga msofti! Ata ana bahati ni hometime. Ningeendelea kumchokoza! ” Boi said with a shrug of pride.

“Lakini wewe Boi pia hungechukua sweater yake. Atavaa nini akienda home?” One of his friends asked reproachfully.

“Nye nye nye nye nye! Pia wewe umekuwa msofti? Ah! Mimi naenda home. Tupatane kesho,” Boi swaggeringly wrapped his new sweater around his neck as he said goodbye to his friends.

( Later on…it was a quiet evening at Boi’s home. Baba Boi was reading a newspaper, Boi and his siblings were watching Bob The Builder on Akili Kids! TV and Mama Boi was folding clothes when she noticed something peculiar)

“Boi! Hii sweater ni ya nani?”

“Eeeeh…Mum unasema?” Boi replied cluelessly.

Then it dawned on Mama Boi…

“Aiyaya! Boi, usiseme hii sweater ni ya Brayo! Eh?”

“Mum sikuelewi,” Boi tried to downplay his mother’s revelation.

“Mwalimu wako amenipigia simu leo jioni kuniambia ulichukua lunch box na sweater ya Brayo by force. Nilidhani mwalimu maybe ameku-mistake na kijana mwingine lakini! Kumbe ni ukweli?” A disappointed Mama Boi replied.

At this point, Boi was feeling quite nervous, his palms were sweaty and he kept fidgeting.

“Maa-aaa–m ni-ni-ni-nilikuwa nataka sweater yake juu-juu-juu…”

“Ju ni nini?” Mama Boi interrupted.

“Ju ni smart na najua ningekuambia unibuiye kama hio ungesema hauna doh.” Boi stammered.

“Ata kama Boi. Hufai kuchukua vitu za watu! Na nikikuambia sina pesa, hufai kukasirika. Si sisi husave tukitaka kununua kitu?” Mama Boi asked.

“Ndiyo mum,” Boi replied with guilt.

“Isitoshe…jana tuliwatch na wewe My Better World. Unakumbuka Abi akihurumia ule kijana mwenye hakuwa na chakula? Alafu, akampeleka kwa hoteli akule?” Mama Boi asked.

“Yes, mum.”

“Mbona hukuhurumia Brayo venye ulichukuwa sweater yake? Unajua aliskia baridi akienda home?”

“Pole mum,” Boi bursted into tears.

“Haiya, fanya aje, kesho nataka urudishie Brayo sweater yake. Uta-apologize to Brayo, Mama Brayo na Teacher Jack, unaskia? Nastaki kusikia hii maneno ya bullying tena, Boi! Tuko pamoja?” Mama Boi said with a stern voice.

“Ndiyo mum,” Boi agreed as he wiped his tears.

“Boi, nataka uniskize kwa makini…ni vizuri kuwa na huruma na kuishi na amani na watu. Ungependa mtu akuchokoze ama achokoze akina Keni?”

“Apana mum,” Boi whimpered.

“Si poa kuchokoza mwenzako ata kidogo! Usirudie tena, tumeelewana?”

“Sitarudia, mum. Promise!” Boi replied.

Since then, Boi has learnt the importance of empathy and now, Boi and Brayo are good friends!

Parents, what do you do when your child is a bully?

“Leo tunaenda kuona lion!” Sydo ran across the house super excited about their trip to the animal orphanage. His parents had promised to take him and his siblings during the school holiday.

“Weweee…unapigia watu kelele!” his dad shouted as he poured tea into the thermos flask. “Ebu kwanza peleka chai kwa meza tukule breakfast. Akina Boi washamaliza kuvaa?”, Baba Boi asked as he passed the tray to Sydo.

“Mum ndio hajamaliza, anatafuta ile kitambaa yake ya kichwa ya color green ”, Sydo mentioned.

“Lakini Mama Boi pia yeye…si ange tafuta hio kitambaa jana usiku. Tutachelewa!”, Baba Boi thought.

“Activate Creature Power Suit!”, Sydo belted out the phrase that Chris and Martin Kratt use in Wild Kratts.

“Ha! Hio ni nini?” Baba Boi asked.

“Hio suit ya akina Chris huwa inachange into any animal unataka alafu inakupea creature powers!” Sydo confidently replied as he arranged the cups and plates on the table.

“Ohh…Okay. Na nimenotice unapenda sana hii kipindi. Wewe unataka creature power gani?” his dad engaged him further.

“Ya Kuswim uko deep end kama Whale!” Sydo cheerfully replied.

“Okay! Wacha nitakutafutia hio creature power suit huko Gikomba!” Baba Boi joked.

“Na wewe, Keni? Ni nini umelearn kwa hio show ya Wild Kratts?” Baba Boi asked as he sat to have his breakfast.

“Every time I watch Wild Kratts with akina Boi, I learn about different animals and the countries they are found in.” Keni smiled smugly to her dad.

“Okeeeey! Kangaroo inapatikana which country?” Baba Boi poked.

“Australia!” Keni responded with gusto!

“Nice! Next time mukiwatch, muniite niwatch pia, sawa? Haiya!  Nyinyi watu…malizeni breakfast haraka tuende tukaone Lion na Mr. Girrafe! Ama mnataka twende kwa shosh instead?” Baba Boi sarcastically suggested.

“Twende!”, Mama Boi replied and sipped the last drop of tea in her cup.

(A few hours later, akina Boi have finally arrived at the animal orphanage.)

“Mama Boi, si uweke kidole yako kwa hii nyumba ya lion tuone nini itafanyika?” Baba Boi teased.

“Aiiiii…wewe eka yako tuone!” Mama Boi shrugged off.

“Haiiiiiya, ndio zile baboons!”, Keni pointed out.

“Twendeni tukawasalimie!” Boi exclaimed.

“Tweendeee! Twendeee! ” Keni agreed. She was feeling exhilarated about the trip and seeing the animals she’s learned in school and on Wild Kratts!

What fun activities are you and your family up to during the school holiday? Tuchapie kwa comments. 🙂

(It’s another ordinary Saturday morning at Boi’s home where Baba Boi kama kawaida, forgot to pass by Center’s supermarket to get breakfast, and now someone has to wake up to go buy…)

“Sydo, Keni…” Mama Boi gently woke the kids up.

“Eee…mum,” Sydo sleepily responded.

“Please amkeni muende mkanunue breakfast haraka haraka nipike,” Mama Boi requested.

“Mummy, leo mimi nataka ile mkate ya train! Aki siutatengeneza Avocado Sandwich?” Keni insisted.

“Sawa ka-mum. Nitawatengenezea,” Mama Boi replied.

“ Haiya bas, Sydo, nimekupa how much?” Mama Boi asked.

“200 bob mum, ninunue nini na nini?” Sydo replied.

“Nunua mkate ile refu ya 100/- , carrots za 30/-, airtime ya 20/- na mafuta ya kupima ya 30/-”. Change itabaki 20/-.” Mama Boi instructed them.

“Mummy tukeep change?” Sydo asked slyly.

“Sawa! Na mkisahau kitu kwa duka itabidi mmerudi tena,” Mama Boi replied with a side-eye.

( A few minutes later the kids came back with groceries and they were quite excite

“Mummy, next month tuna school trip! Teacher alituambia tutapelekwa Lake Naivasha! Tunafaa kuwa tumelipa 700/- in the next two weeks!” Sydo reported.

“Two Weeks! Umekuwa ukisave?” Mama Boi asked.

“Mmmm…Si vile. But si utanilipia tu!” Sydo remarked with conviction.

“Na zile change na allowance mi hukupea, wewe hupeleka wapi?” Mama Boi asked.

“Mimi hukula crisps na ice nikitoka shule… unakumbuka ata ile siku nilikununulia wewe na akina Boi,” Sydo defended himself.

“Wewe Sydo, hmmm…uko na mchezo! Ni juzi tulikuwa tuna watch episode ya savings on Ubongo Kids kwa Akili Kids! TV. Ukweli ama uwongo?” Mama Boi asked.

“Ukweli…” Sydo replied.

“Akina Kibena walikuwa wanatuambia nini kuhusu savings?” Mama Boi asked as she prepped the avocado sandwiches that Keni was eagerly waiting for!

“Walisema ni vizuri ukipata pesa unasave kidogo kidogo. Ukipewa pesa ya lunch, fare ama change, usitumie yote. Unaweka kwa ka-mkebe ndio uweze kujinunulia kitu poa in the future!”, Boi replied with a bit of hesitation.

“Kumbe unajua! Haiya bas, uko na two weeks. Save 25 bob kwa ile 50 bob mimi hukupa. Hio siku ya trip ikifika, nitakuongezea balance. Tuko pamoja?” Mama Boi advised.

“Yes, mummy. Nitafanya hivyo,” Sydo replied with a sense of relief.

“Haiya, enda uamshe akina Dad na Boi wakule breakfast,” Mama Boi requested and Sydo took off!

Wazazi, have you started teaching your children how to save? Kujeni tudiscuss. 🙂

A few days ago my eldest son came home all sweaty. The smell was so foul, for a minute there I wondered if he had rolled in a sewer before heading home. But no, it’s just that at his age, 13 now, he’s sweating a lot more and showering a lot less. So, I did what I normally do when I’m stuck. Call auntie. And as usual, she came through with the super insights:

Step 1: Turn Shower Time to Game Time

This worked best for auntie when my cousins were around that age. She simply turned shower time into a game. Mostly because when the cousins were younger, they used to have rubber duckies with them during baths, but as they got older and started taking showers, in the age of zero instant heaters, it became a bit tricky. So what she would do is present a reward for the children in her household who would take the shortest amount of time to get ready. Safe to say, it was a success! For a little while. I ran out of incentives and naturally, they got demotivated too so, I had to find another longer lasting solution.

Step 2: Leverage on their Role Models

Remember my cool brother who saved up and got himself a bicycle at the tender age of 10? (Click here to see his story) My son really looks up to him. So I just randomly asked him why he’s so fascinated with the man and he said it’s because uncle’s got game but I wouldn’t get it because I’m old. He was right. I am older and wiser which is why when he said he would like to be like my brother when he grows up,  I just mentioned this to him.

“You know, your uncle probably has game because he takes really good care of himself. Showers daily, lotions up, cleans up nice. If you would like to get to his level of game, maybe you could also try out a few of these things. What do you think?” And just like that, my little man started taking his skin care routines a bit more seriously.

Step 3: Invest in his Skin Care Products

So much so that yesterday as I was headed out to the supermarket, he came to me with a  list of skin care items; the Imperial Leather Fresh Burst range (bathing soap, shower gel and lotion) Of course, shocked by this, I wonder why because to the best of my knowledge,  the kiddie soap in the bathroom is not yet over. But then he says to me instead, “ Mom, uncle and dad use these products which is why they are both trendy and always smell sooo good. “ So of course I try to counter this argument with- the kiddie soap also smells great but eventually he breaks into a loud “ But it’s not for men. I want to use products for men because I am now a man. ” He then proceeded in a tiny voice, “ Also, the ad for it on Akili Kids! plays just after that episode on Ubongo Kids where they talk about hygiene and caring for our bodies, so I’d like to be as cool as them too.”

So obviously step 4 is Watch Akili Kids!

Not just because it’s a great TV station for children that I advocate for all the time, but also because some times, our children’s role models do not come from real life. Sometimes they come from the content they consume on TV. Kind of like my son’s role models are from Ubongo kids on Akili Kids!

I would like to know, which shows on Akili Kids! are your children’s role models from?

And if you would like to know if I bought the Imperial Leather Fresh Burst range for my little man, check back for part 2.

“Ngo! Ngo! Ngo!”

There’s a knock on the door. “Wacha niende nikafungue mlango, mummy!”, Keni shouted as she ran towards the door hoping that it was Boi.

“BOI! Boi amekuja! Wametoka mid-term! Yess!!!”, Keni jumped at Boi and gave him a heartfelt hug. “Kumbe daddy alikuja kukuchukua kutoka shule, nimekumiss!”, Keni said as she held her brother’s hand and walked to the kitchen. Their dad, feeling proud to see his son and daughter bond, left Boi’s suitcase at the door and followed them to the kitchen. Mama Boi’s brown and soft-layered chapatis were calling them by name. She makes her chapos extra special by adding ghee.

“Mmmh…Chapos!”, they all exclaimed. “MMmmhh…ni tamuuu!”, Boi and his dad looked at each other as they took another bite. “Mimi na Sydo tumesaidia mum kupika chapo!”, Keni babbled.

“Good Job, guys! Ni tamu sana”, Boi commented while devouring a few more chapos.

(A few hours later, Boi and his family are relaxing in their living room)

“Boi, how were the exams?”, Baba Boi asked.

“Tough. I tried my best, dad”, Boi replied as he handed over his file to his parents.

“Ei! Na hii composition nikama ilikulemea! Hio jina ‘hodgepodge’ inaandikwa hivyo kweli? Ebu leta dictionary tuconfirm. Ei…more spelling mistakes? Flabber..what? Haha! Wacha tujifunze these words pamoja”,  Baba Boi teased.

“Spelling is quite hard, dad”, Boi claimed as he brought the dictionary and sat next to his dad.

“Don’t worry, son. We will learn the correct spelling of the words you missed and come up with a plan to improve your spelling skills, sawa? ”, his dad encouraged him.

“And if you keep learning new words every day, you will be able to participate in spelling bee competitions like the one on Akili Kids! TV. Kwanza you’re just in time for episode 2!”, Baba Boi gushed.

“Episode 2 ni this Saturday and Sunday at 9am and 6pm! The competition is awarding the contestants amazing prizes! This time, the top prize is a tablet!”, Mama Boi added.

“Wow! I’d love to own a tablet”, Boi exclaimed.

“One day, you will get a tablet. Haiko mbali! First, let’s learn some new words today. Alafu, I want you to form a habit of reading short stories every week. Si shule mkona library?”, Baba Boi asked.

“Yes, dad”, Boi replied.

“Good! Make the library your second home. Pick up a book and if you’re not sure about a word, confirm by looking up the word from the dictionary. Before you know it, we’ll be seeing you on TV taking part in spelling competitions!”, Baba Boi said confidently.

“Sawa sawa, dad”, Boi agreed.

“So how do you spell this word?”, Baba Boi pointed out the word from Boi’s composition.

“F-l-a-b-b-e-r-g-a-s-t-e-d!”, Boi replied.

“Correct!” Baba Boi confirmed.
