Ad Policy

Akili TV Advertising Policy

Akili TV advertising policy reflects our commitment to protecting children. As a trusted provider of children's content, Akili Network has developed Kenya’s most protective child advertising policy. This policy ensures that all advertising around our content is appropriate, avoids promoting nutritionally questionable foods, and discourages children from engaging in harmful activities. We always consider the age of the target audience when determining suitable advertising for children's content.

For the purposes of these guidelines, we define children as all individuals under the age of 16.

Channel advertising primarily targets parents and caregivers and is based on the type of product or service. However, all advertising must also be suitable for children under 16. It must not include any material that would be inappropriate for an unsupervised child. Behaviour change communications and government-mandated public service announcements must also suit the intended audience.

Akili TV! Advertisements Must:

  1. NOT contain anything that could physically, mentally, or morally harm children.

  2. NOT encourage children to imitate unsafe behavior. For example, ads must not show children in dangerous situations like crossing a main road without adult supervision.

  3. NOT encourage children to enter unfamiliar places or interact with strangers. For example, ads must not promote websites that lack proper moderation.

  4. NOT include offensive or profane language.

  5. NOT imply that a child is inferior or unpopular for not purchasing a specific product.

  6. NOT exploit children's trust, loyalty, vulnerability, or inexperience.

  7. NOT encourage children to replace main meals with unhealthy snacks or drinks. Advertising for foods and drinks high in fat, salt, or sugar (“HFSS”) is strictly prohibited, especially if it suggests they are alternatives to a balanced diet. Treats such as cakes may only appear in the context of rare and special occasions like birthday celebrations. Advertising baby formula is explicitly forbidden.

  8. Accurately portray parental role models or characters in physical, emotional, and economic terms.

  9. Uphold truth in advertising by accurately representing all products and services.

We follow local market best practices when developing and applying our advertising standards. You can request a copy of Akili Network’s detailed Nutrition Policy by emailing us at hodi@akilinetwork.com.

Akili Network’s internal Advertising Standards Council reviews all advertisements for Akili TV! This team has the authority to approve or reject ads based on the product, content, and suitability for different age groups. While certain products may be suitable for older viewers later in the day, they may not be approved during preschool programming hours.
